MEMORIAL DAY MARKS THE BEGINNING OF SUMMER SEASON

In the Springtime, with the disappearance of the dirty snow, the April rains, the blooms of daffodils, tulips, azaleas, rhododendrons, also comes Senior Proms, graduations and yes, of course, Memorial Day Parades.

Around the York County Lakes Region, there are several other traditions which have continued for forty or fifty years.

The first is the planting of the window boxes at our real estate office - always with red geraniums and various types of greenery. This year, we chose to use Sweet Potato vines for the greenery.  Beginning on Memorial Day, we add small American flags in honor of those who have gone before.

The next task is to brighten up the WELCOME TO THE LAKES REGION sign at the top of the hill.  Each year, we try to enhance the appearance of the "welcome" as both the locals and the visitors from out-of-state come to enjoy all of the wonders of what our lakes region has to offer.

Perhaps the most wonderful tradition that we have practiced in our family is the placement of small American flags along the first mile of West Shore Drive, heading into Square Pond in Acton.  This began some forty years ago, with my daughter helping me out - first steadying the ladder for me, and then graduating to climbing the ladder while I steadied it for her to place or re-place the flags.  Now, for the past ten or twelve years, our grandson has been my assistant. We are hoping that during the coming months, we will be able to raise funds for the placement of permanent holders for larger flags to adorn the entrance to Square Pond.  STAY TUNED!!!
