BACK TO SCHOOL!!!

This morning, at the regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Sanford-Springvale, members were treated to an upbeat, POSITIVE message from one of its own members - Ericka Sanborn, a middle school English teacher at Saint Thomas Catholic School in Sanford.

She began her teaching career at Saint Joseph's College in Windham.  Following that, she moved to the Catherine McAuley School for Girls in Portland and now, returned to her native city of Sanford, after a brief stint at the York County Community Action Program.

"When beginning a talk (she explained to her students) you always need a "HOOK", and today, that was a confession on Ericka's part that she has a fascination with the sitcom, The Golden Girls," almost taking it to an obsession by transforming herself, her daughter and her husband into the characters of Dorothy, Sophia and Stanley, from the series. The resemblance was unacanny.

Ericka's talk centered around relationships and how we often hear but fail to listen to others.  In today's society, we so often encounter the younger generation constantly "on" their phones or tablets, rather than interacting with others - face to face.  "If you want to bring about a change in relationships you may have with any generation, you may have to change your means of communication, but moreover, be a model for others to observe and to follow."

Sage advice from one who is doing her best to open the minds of our youngsters to the possibilities what exist beyond the screens on their cell phones!
