After all State and County fairs were closed down this past year by Governor Mills, this year was a welcome relief of that mandate. Being one of the first Fairs in Maine, the Acton Fair enjoyed its 155th year in existence, with great enthusiasm from locals, as well as tourists from out-of-state.
Perhaps one of the most popular attractions to the Acton Fair is the booth occupied by the Rotary Club of Sanford-Springvale. The Club has maintained a presence here for well over forty years. In the beginning, Rotarians gathered to cook and sell Chicken Dinners, grilling half-chickens over hot coals for the four days of the Fair. However, with most patrons not wishing to actually sit down for a full meal, popularity of "finger food" prevails. The Club quickly adapted to preparing a most unusual delicacy - grilled chicken livers and onions!
Today, this gourmet treat has become the "go to" favorite at the Fair. People come year after year, stating, "This is the only reason I come to the Acton Fair" or "I have been waiting for this for an entire year!" Although the Rotarians have been asked to take their "show on the road", they prefer to maintain the uniqueness of their product, and this very successful fund-raiser. The proceeds from this venture, along with other donations, serve to help fund various charitable projects for the Club, both local and global.
So, if you missed the Acton Fair this year, and more particularly, missed the savory tastes and smells of the world famous Chicken Livers, then mark your calendars for next year - August 25-28. The Rotary Club members will be there, will you?
